Set a stop when opening or modifying the trade
In MT4 or MT5, use the order window’s Stop Loss field. For an existing position, open its modification controls from the Trade tab. In Exness Terminal, the pencil icon beside a position in Portfolio opens its stop-loss and take-profit settings.
For a simple initial buy setup, the stop is below entry; for a sell, it is above. After submission, read the saved stop price on the position. A typed value that the terminal rejected is not an active stop.
| Direction | Assumed entry | Assumed stop | Price distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy EUR/USD | 1.1000 | 1.0950 | 0.0050 = 50 pips if 1 pip = 0.0001 |
| Sell EUR/USD | 1.1000 | 1.1050 | 0.0050 = 50 pips under the same assumption |
Hypothetical calculation
Size the trade from the stop distance
Assume a USD 2,000 balance, a 0.5% gross loss budget and a 50-pip stop. The budget is USD 10. At an assumed USD 10 per pip per full lot, the size is 10 ÷ (50 × 10) = 0.02 lots.
This hypothetical calculation excludes charges and execution differences. An HKD-based budget needs a quote-to-account conversion factor; replacing USD 10 with HKD 10 without conversion changes the trade size.
What to confirm in the account or terminal
Why a stop modification may fail
A stop can be too close to the current price, use the wrong price precision or fall on the wrong side for the order. The instrument’s current stop-level restriction and the exact rejection message help distinguish these cases.
If the connection drops after a modification, reconnect and read the recorded position before repeating the instruction. Do not assume that the old screen proves the server rejected the change.
Fixed stops and trailing stops behave differently
A trailing stop moves a stop level as price moves favourably according to its settings. Exness documents it for desktop MetaTrader: the terminal must remain running for the trailing function to keep updating. A stop already sent to the server remains separate from those future updates.
The Hong Kong evening may overlap with another market’s active session, but your local clock does not determine a symbol’s hours. Plan monitoring around the instrument schedule and the platform running the trailing process.
CFD trading risk
Leveraged CFDs can cause substantial losses, including the money in your trading account. Margin is not a loss limit, and a stop-loss does not guarantee its execution price.
